Dr. Westman is also board certified in internal medicine and obesity medicine, and has a masters degree in clinical research. His clinical research and clinical care relate to lifestyle treatments for obesity, diabetes, and tobacco dependence, and has over 90 peer-reviewed publications. He is currently the president of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, and a fellow of the Obesity Society and the Society of General Internal Medicine.

Dr. Wendy Pogozelski received her B.S. in Chemistry from Chatham University and her PhD from The John Hopkins University. She was an Office of Naval Research post-doctoral fellow at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C. In 1996, she came to Geneseo where she now holds the rank of Distinguished Teaching Professor and serves as Chair of the Chemistry Department. In her laboratory work, Dr. Pogozelski and her students investigate the effects of radiation on mitochondria. Since developing an interest in the biochemistry of nutrition, Dr. Pogozelski has been working with an international group of scientists and clinicians who are trying to bridge the gulf between scientific research and nutrition education.

Karen Thomson is the founder of the Harmony Eating & Lifestyle Program (HELP), the world’s first inpatient programme treating carbohydrate and sugar as an addiction. This programme is run in conjunction with Prof. Tim Noakes and the Harmony Addictions Clinic. Karen also sits on the panel of experts for Australian sugar crusader Sarah Wilson’s online program, I Quit Sugar. Karen has been interviewed for various television health programmes such as Dr Michael Mol and Doctor’s Orders. She has also been featured in articles relating to sugar addiction in Cosmopolitan, YOU Magazine, Women’s Health and Sarie.

About Prof. Noakes

Professor Timothy Noakes is professor of exercise and sports science at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He has run more than 70 marathons and ultra-marathons, and is the author of the running book Lore of Running. Over the past thirty years Prof. Noakes has contributed significantly to the scientific literature through his exploration of topical exercise science and sports medicine issues including marathon running and the heart, the biochemical and physiological parameters of endurance athletes, sudden death during endurance exercise, injuries in rugby players, understanding what makes African runners so fast and water intoxication in endurance runners. By nature of his chosen field of academia and his active participation in endurance sports, Tim is not only interested in the theory of sports science, he lives it.
