140 [Updated Audio] Managing Brain Cancer Through Diet with Andrew Scarborough

00:0000:00
Andrew is attempting to manage his incurable brain cancer and epilepsy with a ketogenic diet while studying Human and Medical Sciences at the University of Westminster. The metabolic theory of cancer and the study of epigenetics are his main subjects of interest. In April 2013 he was diagnosed with Anaplastic Astrocytoma (WHO grade III) and epilepsy. His aim is to build on his existing knowledge and conduct his own research as he progresses. As an informed cancer patient connected and engaged firmly in cancer research Andrew plans to make the most of the opportunities he has at the University of Westminster in order to achieve his goals. He is also a patient advocate, engaged with researchers at Imperial College London and the neuro-oncology team at Charing Cross Hospital. They are looking closely at various ways to exploit weaknesses in cancer metabolism. A role is now being created for him after my continued success utilising this approach.

132 LCHF 101 with Jess Paige

00:0000:00
Jessica recently graduated with a degree in Food Science & Nutrition from McGill. By day, she's a premed student and volunteer medic and by night, a food blogger over at JessPaigeLCHF.  A few years ago, her and her family decided to go low-carb at the suggestion of her father’s cardiologist. He had been diagnosed with an enlarged heart due to his size and was told he would require a pacemaker within a year if he did not change his lifestyle drastically. He was 53 at the time and had a body fat percentage of 36%. Flash forward to 2015, he has dropped all the excess weight and sits comfortably at 11% body fat. Jess has seen wonderful changes in both her blood work and overall with how she feels.

067 Ketogenic Diet Therapies with Emma Williams MBE

Posted in health, ketogenic diet, diet, epilepsy by smashthefat on July 28th, 2014

00:0000:00
Emma set up the charity in her son’s name in 2004 after Matthew had responded so well to a ketogenic diet as it had been the only thing to give him his life back after years of constant seizures and brain damage. Emma maintains to this day that it was the diet that saved his life but she had an enormous struggle for him to obtain the diet in the first place. Her aim is always to give people an informed choice, support families and patients and dispel the myths and misconceptions that there are surrounding ketogenic dietary therapies. The charity specialises solely in ketogenic dietary therapies and works closely with its medical board and works with charity partners and ketogenic centres around the globe and has grown at a phenomenal rate. In 2011 they set up their own Treatment Clinic which not only treats children and adults with epilepsy but is now working with medical professionals looking at the possibility of ketogenic dietary therapies being helpful for Brain Cancer.

057 Using Diet To Manage Seizures with Mike Dancer

Posted in health, fitness, low carb, ketogenic diet, endurance, sugar, calories, diet, cancer, men's health, epilepsy by smashthefat on July 2nd, 2014

00:0000:00
On September 8, 2000, Mike was managing Fitness Services at the University Of Birmingham. He took a phone call at 6 p.m. and the next thing he knew he was at home. Mike had complete amnesia from the 3 hours in between, he'd had a convulsive seizure. Neurologists went on to say that he would suffer progressive brain damage and would slowly die over the next 5 years. Anti-epilepsy drugs couldn't stop further seizures and became more frequent and more severe. He was told to take more and more drugs and these led to increasing side effects, which impacted severely on his endocrine and immune systems as well as destroying his memory.

As time went on Mike communicated with people on the Bodybuilding.com forums. One user called dpd555, who was actually Dr. Dominic D’Agostino from Expert Interview 42 , http://live.smashthefat.com/starving-cancer/ , asked if Mike had ever heard of a ketogenic diet. He explained that it is an approach that was used for children suffering with frequent, bad seizures back in the 1920s and 1930s before anti-epilepsy drugs had been invented. This approach had been abandoned for a number of decades but was now being used once more particularly for children where anti-epilepsy drugs had no effect. On July 15, 2008 Mike put this into practice. Over the months that followed he realized that his seizures had reduced, remarkably and from the few he did have he recovered much quicker. To this day Mike remains on a ketogenic diet to manage his seizures and thrives on it!
